A great review from one of our students:

We spent 2 weeks at Spanish Ya in July 2010. In addition to studying Spanish, we also did the homestay with the Spanish school director. Our accommodations included one room with two beds, two fans, desk, & bathroom. We were there in the heat of the winter with lots of rain and humidity. The fans were a blessing as we are quite spoiled by our cool Pacific Northwest weather. Meals were on time and featured local Nicaraguan food. We asked for a restricted diet which was followed by the family. We enjoyed interacting with the family at the house. We got to hear fabulous stories from Alan who is a fisherman and were always entertained by Alancito (son) and his stories.

Our family included 2 adults and 2 daughters (11/13). We were all at different levels and had 1:1 teachers. The teachers were kind, patient, and quick to adjust to our needs. Our youngest daughter enjoyed her teacher's drawing and shopping excursions as she was new to Spanish and is a visual learner. My teacher adjusted to my need to write things down. My oldest daughter soared through and feels she has a big jump start on Spanish 2 for next year. My husband wanted to focus on medical Spanish, and his teacher was quite knowledgeable in this area. Overall, the Spanish instruction for our entire family was a wonderful experience. I can safely say I learned more in 2 weeks than I ever imagined possible. I am still not fluent but am motivated to continue studying!

The director of Spanish Ya, Yajaira, also worked with us to arrange volunteer experiences. This willingness really set her school apart from others. Instead of being hesitant to accept a family of 4 wanting to spend half time volunteering in the community, she jumped right in. She was able to secure opportunities for us that met our interests and skills. The volunteering included teaching classes in needle work and computers at the library, volunteering in the local public schools, volunteering on the mobile library, and volunteering at a clinic in town. Amazingly, our Spanish teachers accompanied us (and helped a bunch!) on all of our volunteer activities. The volunteer experience was the highlight of our trip.

There were several activities to choose from each week as well. While we did not do all of them, we enjoyed the company and help of one of our teachers on each one we attended. Our favorite activities were the ziplining at Da Flying Frog and the swimming excursion to Mango Rosa. Yajaira also helped us arrange transport to and from the school to Ometepe where we spent one weekend.

Overall, we feel the homestay and Spanish school was an wonderful opportunity for our family to learn Spanish and to get a feel for Nicaraguan culture. The experience was 100% individualized and customized to meet our expectations and needs. The hot conditions were a challenge for us, but at the end we were thankful for many things in our lives.

Visiting San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua.

If you have one week of vacation and think a week of Spanish program in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua would be good for you, you are right.

For those who doesn't know yet, one week of Spanish course is not only Spanish classes but an excellent way to improve your Spanish skills in that little amount of time, and besides this, you would have a good opportunity to meet new friends, do different activities like horse back riding, go to a fishing trip, to have a home-cooking class, stay with a Nicaraguan family and many other things I could mention.

Dear Friends,

This note is to let you know that we will open our DELE Preparation Course from this June 1st up to August 14th, 2009.

The DELE preparation course cost $ 200 per week; this is 20 hours of instructions focused on the DELE exam. Please, also note that we are happy to arrange the home-stay option for $ 110.00 per week, 3 meals included. On the other hand, our basic weekly course is open all year round and it is $ 220.00 (not focused in the DELE exam, but in your basic Spanish needs), everything included. 20 hours of classes, 3 activities per week, home-stay and meals.

The DELE preparation courses are programmed in three levels for students who wish to obtain a certificate proving that they have successfully passed an official exam. Each year, more and more companies and academic institutions in Spanish-speaking countries look for, and even require, tangible proof of candidates’ Spanish knowledge. The DELE certificate is an invaluable asset with endless pay offs, especially if you are considering studying abroad in a Spanish or Latin American university, are looking forward to work in a Spanish-speaking country or simply want to improve your conversational skills.

The Spanish DELE (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera) exam for the last three levels consists of 5 different parts. The main difference of the 3 levels is the difficulty and the time available for each part.

The first part examines the student's reading comprehension. In this part you will read a text which will vary in length and difficulty depending on the exam you are taking. After reading the text the student has to answer a number of multiple choice questions about the text.

In the second part of the DELE exam your writing skills are tested. In this part you will be asked to write a small text an essay depending on the Spanish level of your exam.

The third part is made up of listening exercises where the student has to answer a number of questions after hearing a Spanish text read aloud.

The fourth part of the DELE Test consists of multiple choice questions and filling in blank spaces with the correct Spanish word. This part measures your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.

The oral test comes last. In this fifth part the student is interviewed and has to talk to the examiner in Spanish for about 10-15 minutes about a picture or a specific topic.

DELE examination now are available in Nicaragua, with Spanish Ya.

Regular examination dates 2009:
- I Test, May 2009: Friday, May 15th
  Registration accepted between March 2nd and April 24th, 2009.
- II Test, August 2009: Friday, August 21st Registration accepted between July 13th and July 31st, 2009.
- III Test, November 2009: Friday, November 13th Registration accepted between September 1st and October 16th, 2009.

I was in La Isla de Ometepe 10 years ago. Robert had never been there, and he wanted to hike Volcano Maderas. Michelle and Theo joined us for the weekend trip to Isla de Ometepe. Alansito came as well, of course! Friday we got everything ready for our trip. Allan took us in his Land Cruiser on Saturday morning and we made arrangements to take his vehicle on the ferry to the island. Our first stop was Charco Verde Reserve. We met a local man from Isla de Ometepe while on the ferry and he gave us a tour throughout the reserve. We saw a howler monkey trying to catch our attention from a tree.

After that we went to El Ojo de Agua, the only natural pool on the island with the most crystal clear water that I have ever seen in my life. It was gorgeous and we had lunch there for a good price but note that you need to order it 40 minutes before you get hungry due to extremely slow service! On our way to find a place to sleep we passed by a beach called Playa Santo Domingo and we saw amazing views of Volcano Concepción through the windows of Alan’s car. We tried to find a place to sleep close to Volcano Maderas because Michelle, Theo, Robert, and Alan wanted to hike up it. So we tried to stay at Finca Magdalena but we could not stay there… why? After they showed us the rooms, Michelle and I just laughed out loud… it was incredible, just incredible. It was buggy, dark, and smelly!

We finally ended up staying the night at La Omaja. The owner was very kind to us and the food was very good. The next morning, Michelle, Theo, Robert, and Allan got up early in the morning and got ready to hike the volcano. In the meantime, Alancito and I went to visit Mr. Burro, a donkey, at Finca Merida. He was troubling the people by trying to drink their coffee as he wanted to share their breakfasts with them.

"Our anniversary for the library is Nov 15th. You and your students would be very welcome to join in the festivities. We need face painters, balloon animal makers etc! Bests, your friend, Jane Mirandette" - Yes, these were the words from Jane, and this next November 15th we will be celebrating with her and all the community of San Juan del Sur. Our Spanish students will get involved in the celebration, as well as, our teachers and all the kids of town. Jane started the library in 2001 with a few hundred books and now seven years after that with 12,500 books in English and Spanish, the San Juan del Sur library lends them to almost 5,000 library cardholders.

In addition to the library, Jane has created a traveling library program that takes books to children in secluded communities. Almost 4,000 new library cards have been issued to adults and children because of it.

And English lessons are offered to people who is involved in the tourism service, and this have had a great acceptance in San Juan del Sur

San Juan del Sur Needs Volunteer English teachers

The Biblioteca Movil is running a Free English course for locals in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua and is looking for volunteers who might be interested in have a rewarding experience as teaching abroad.

Here is a briefly description of the program:

1) Volunteer Projects Description

English teachers or language coaches needed for beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes. It is a great way to meet locals in San Juan del Sur. You can also set up a language exchange where you speak English and Spanish with one of the students.

2) Minimum/Maximum Length of Time

Classes last for 10 weeks and are only one night a week for three hours.

3) Volunteer Duties and Responsibilities

Teachers- Give English class once a week. We have materials and books to help you plan the class. Language coaches- Come ready to help with the conversational aspects of class. You have the option of coming to one or as many classes as you like.

4) Volunteer Qualifications and Requirements

After to work in a Spanish school a few years ago, and now that I have the opportunity to open a new Spanish school here in San Juan del Sur, with some of my friends who have been working as Spanish instructors for more than four years; I see that I have the chance to offer a good program to students and travelers who want to improve their Spanish language skills while they travel through Nicaragua.

We want to focus our main work on volunteering opportunities to our students, and most of our after-classes activities are related to community works, and I personally think this is the best idea we had the students will have the opportunity to turn on their classes into practicing.
